When Iain Dunn calmly slotted in a close-range goal to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead against Lincoln City, the former Huddersfield Town winger unwittingly etched his name into the annals of history. Dunn, with over 120 appearances for the Terriers, scored English football’s inaugural Golden Goal in a Round Two EFL Trophy clash against Lincoln City in November 1994.

Following a 2-2 draw in regular time, the new rules dictated that the next goal would determine the winner in extra time. Dunn’s decisive goal secured victory for Huddersfield, ending the match immediately and earning accolades for Neil Warnock’s team.
The 53-year-old received a commemorative trophy resembling a golden Mitre football mounted on a plinth. In the same season, the 1995 Auto Windscreens Shields Trophy Final at Wembley witnessed another historic moment.
In extra time, Birmingham City and Carlisle United faced a deadlock until Blues midfielder Paul Tait, brought in as a substitute, netted the Golden Goal. Tait rose highest to connect with Ricky Otto’s delivery, securing victory with the winning goal in the 103rd minute.
This marked the first Wembley Final decided by the Golden Goal rule, as commentator Alan Parry exclaimed, “For the first time in Wembley history, we can say with absolute certainty that that’s the winner!”

Birmingham celebrated their second triumph in the competition, having previously won in 1991 against Tranmere Rovers. The Golden Goal, introduced in the 1990s and formally implemented in 1993, played a role in various major tournaments, including Germany’s 1996 Euro Final victory over the Czech Republic, before eventually being abolished.
