Following Georgia’s loss to Alabama in the SEC championship game on Saturday, the fate of the 12-1 Bulldogs now rests in the hands of the 13-person selection committee, currently meeting in Grapevine, Texas.
As the two-time reigning national champions, there is a possibility that Georgia may be excluded from the four-team College Football Playoff field, set to be announced on ESPN at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday.

The unbeaten Big Ten champion, Michigan (13-0), and Pac-12 champion, Washington (13-0), seem poised to secure playoff spots, leaving contention for the remaining positions between Big 12 champion Texas (12-1), SEC champion Alabama (12-1), ACC champion Florida State (13-0), and Georgia.
If Georgia fails to make the top four, the Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens becomes a likely destination, where the Bulldogs would face an ACC team. The Orange Bowl is committed to selecting the highest-ranked SEC or Big Ten team not making the playoff against the highest-ranked ACC team outside the playoff—potentially Florida State or Louisville.

For Georgia to miss the Orange Bowl, it would need to fall below one-loss Ohio State, currently at No. 6. Other non-playoff bowls include the Fiesta, Cotton, and Peach Bowls. Georgia last played in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31, 2021, defeating Michigan 34-11 in a playoff semifinal.
This year’s Orange Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 30, at 4 p.m. on ESPN, with the winners advancing to the national championship game in Houston on Jan. 8.
