In a tragic turn of events during the Nottingham Panthers’ English Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers, US striker Adam Johnson suffered a severe injury when his neck was slashed by a skate blade in a collision on the ice. The distressing incident unfolded in front of 8,000 spectators, who witnessed the ice hockey star collapsing while attempting to exit the rink. Despite losing a significant amount of blood, team doctors successfully revived Johnson before rushing him to a clinic. Regrettably, the game had to be canceled.

On Sunday, the Nottingham Panthers announced the heartbreaking news of the 29-year-old player’s passing. Born in Minnesota, Johnson had a notable career, making 13 appearances in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Until the summer, he played for the Augsburg Panthers in the DEL, contributing seven goals and 15 assists in 45 games.
Johnson’s mother, Kari Johnson, expressed her grief, stating, “I have lost half of my heart. I will love you forever, my little one.”
Augsburg manager Duanne Moeser conveyed the difficulty of the situation, describing Johnson as a “very nice boy” and refraining from further comment. Coach Christof Kreutzer acknowledged the emotional impact on the teammates who played alongside Johnson, including Trevelyan, Puempel, and Endras.

The DEL (German Ice Hockey League) responded to the tragedy, with match operations manager Jörg van Ameln revealing plans to discuss the introduction of a neck brace for the new season during a meeting of the clubs’ sporting directors on November 27th. He mentioned that this safety measure is already mandatory in Finland and Sweden. Moreover, cut-resistant underwear and neck braces have been implemented in the German youth sector. As a tribute, minutes of silence were observed in DEL arenas on Sunday in remembrance of Adam Johnson.
