There were several Elvis songs to consider for the film “Priscilla,” including classics like “Love Me Tender,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and the somewhat sweet yet, by today’s standards, somewhat menacing “Wear My Ring Around Your Neck.”
Surprisingly, no Elvis tracks will be featured in director Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” which is set to open for a wide release on Friday, screening in theaters across North America, including eight locations in the Memphis area that served as the home base for both Elvis and Priscilla.
Based on Priscilla Beaulieu Presley’s 1985 best-selling memoir, “Elvis and Me,” “Priscilla” delves into what Coppola has dubbed as “the dark side” of Elvis Presley’s character. This perspective is seen through the eyes of Priscilla, who is a decade younger than the King, during their courtship and marriage.
Priscilla Presley serves as an executive producer for the film. However, Elvis Presley Enterprises, the majority owner being Joel Weinshanker, declined to grant permission to use Elvis’s music in the movie. According to Weinshanker, the estate only grants licenses or authorizes the use of Elvis’s recordings for projects that “Elvis would be proud of.” Coppola explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “They are cautious about projects they didn’t initiate, and they’re protective of the Elvis brand.”
One might expect that the absence of Elvis’s music in a film about Elvis would be a significant challenge. (Director Baz Luhrmann didn’t face this issue in his recent biopic, “Elvis,” which is packed with Presley’s music, at times presented in remixed or altered forms.) However, it’s likely that Coppola didn’t have a strong preference for including Elvis’s music in the first place. In her own words, the absence of Presley’s recordings “pushed us to be more creative.”
