What is Barnsley F.C.?
Barnsley F.C. is an English professional football club based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The club currently competes in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Founded in 1887, the club was elected to The Football League in 1898 and has spent the majority of its history in England’s second and third tiers.
The club’s roots can be traced back to 1887 when a group of local dignitaries founded Barnsley St. Peter’s, a church team that played in the Sheffield & District Football Association. In April 1888, they were one of six founding members of the breakawayBarnsley & District Football Alliance.

In 1897 Barnsley became a professional team and were admitted into the Second Division of The Football League after a successful vote by fellow members. They finished their first season in mid-table with crowds averaging 5,000 per game.
The following year saw more success on the field as they finished 5th, but financial problems off it resulted in Barnsley being relegated back to the Alliance at the end of the season. However, they quickly bounced back and were promoted again at the end of 1898/99. This time they held their place in The Football League for three seasons before being relegated again at the end of 1901/02.
