About the Cincinnati Bengals
The Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football franchise based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bengals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Their home stadium is Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati. Founded in 1968 as an expansion team, the Bengals have played in Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XXIII. They lost both Super Bowls by wide margins. The Bengals have yet to win a playoff game since 1990 despite having qualified for the playoffs seven times since then and winning their division three times.
The Bengal’s name derives from an earlier professional franchise in Cincinnati also called the Bengals that used to play in a now-defunct minor league, the AFL. Mike Brown, son of legendary coach Paul Brown, was determined to bring professional football back to Cincinnati and revived the name when he established his own team in 1967. He chose black and orange as the team colors because they were not being used by any other NFL or AFL teams at the time.
Players such as wide receiver A. J. Green, running backs Giovani Bernard and Joe Mixon, linebacker Vontaze Burfict, and defensive end Carlos Dunlap are some of the current stars on the roster. The team is currently coached by Marvin Lewis who has been with the organization since 2003, making him the longest-tenured head coach in franchise history.
History of the team
The Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football franchise based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bengals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Their home stadium is Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati. They are the second-oldest franchise in the NFL, and one of the oldest professional sports franchises in the United States, having been founded in 1968 as an expansion team.
The Bengals were founded by former head coach Paul Brown. Brown was fired by the Cleveland Browns after the 1962 season due to disagreements with owner Art Modell. In January 1963, Brown was offered a job by Bengals owner and oilman Maxor Kaufman to start a new franchise which would begin play in 1968. The team name was inspired by an earlier professional football team in Cincinnati of the same name that existed from 1937–1941 and played in the American Football League (AFL). Kaufman hired Brown as its first head coach and general manager on February 8, 1968.
How the team got its name
The Cincinnati Bengals NFL team got its name from its owner and founder, Paul Brown. Brown was named after the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, which was his previous team. The name “Bengals” was chosen because of the fierce tiger that is indigenous to that region of Ohio.
