The history of the Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) and are one of the Original Six teams of the league. The Red Wings were founded in 1926 as the Detroit Cougars, one of six teams then competing in the NHL. The name was changed to the Falcons in 1930, and finally to Red Wings in 1932. The franchise was purchased by James E. Norris in 1932. In 1936, Norris built Olympia Stadium to replace Border Cities Arena; it would serve as their home arena for almost four decades.

The Red Wings made the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in 1934 with three straight wins over Toronto Maple Leafs. They reached the Stanley Cup Final for a second time in 1942, losing to Toronto 3–1 despite outscoring them 11–5 in the series. Led by stars such as Sid Abel, Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsey, and Goaltender Terry Sawchuk, they won their first Stanley Cup championship in 1943, defeating Boston Bruins 4–0. The following year they lost to Montreal Canadiens in five games during semifinal playoff round despite another dominating performance by Sawchuk who recorded three shutouts during that series giving up only seven goals total.

In 1950, Howe returned to lead the team to their seventh Stanley Cup Finals appearance where they once again faced off against Montreal; this time winning the series 4–3 on an overtime goal by
