About Matthew Stafford

Matthew Stafford is an American football quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Rams first overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Georgia, and was a two-time All-SEC selection.

Stafford was born on February 7, 1988, in Tampa, Florida, to parents John and Margaret Stafford. His father was a former NFL quarterback who played for the Atlanta Falcons from 1978 to 1982. Stafford grew up in Dallas, Texas, and attended Highland Park High School. As a senior, he threw for 2,051 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was named honorable mention All-State and All-District as a senior.

Stafford accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Georgia, where he played for coach Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs football team from 2006 to 2008. As a freshman in 2006, Stafford appeared in 12 games and started seven of them after competing with Joe Cox for the starting quarterback job during preseason practice. He completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 1,749 yards with 10 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. His interception total broke the Georgia single-season record previously held by Johnny Rauch (12 in 1950). In 2007, as a sophomore, Stafford became only the second sophomore quarterback ever to start all 13 games for Georgia
