The team was established on January 30, 1960, and began play on September 11, 1960, as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The Raiders’ off-field fortunes have been much less successful than their on-field performance, with an intense rivalry between the team and the Oakland Raiders that has spanned almost their entire history.
The Raider name first appeared in print in a newspaper article on April 5, 1961. It was then popularized by AFL Commissioner Al Davis when he used it to refer to his franchise in Oakland. When the AFL—NFL merger took place in 1970, the newly merged league decided that each existing AFL franchise would be paired with an NFL counterpart.
As part of this realignment, the AFL San Francisco 49ers were paired with the NFL Green Bay Packers and moved to Northern California. In order for there to be an even number of teams in each conference after this expansion, one AFC team had to move to the NFC; thus, the Oakland Raiders were shifted to the AFC West division to make room for the San Francisco 49ers now in the NFC West division. This meant that both Oakland and San Francisco had teams in each conference for every year since 1950 excepting 1966 when only one California-based franchise
