Why Tony Gonzalez Retired
Tony Gonzalez announced his retirement from the NFL on Feb. 26, 2017. After playing for the Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins, Gonzalez retired with the most receiving yards in NFL history with 1,549.
Gonzalez’s retirement is certainly bittersweet as he leaves the game as one of its all-time greats. Still only 36 years old, Gonzalez played 15 seasons and averaged over 120 receiving yards per season. A five-time Pro Bowler (2003-07 with Atlanta; 2008-11 with Kansas City; 2013 with Washington), Gonzalez was an integral part of three playoff teams and was named to four All-Pro teams (2004-07 with Atlanta; 2010-11 with Kansas City; 2013 with Washington).
Averaging 16 yards per reception in his career, Gonzalez’s ability to get open consistently was a big part of his success. He had 11 consecutive seasons recording at least 1,000 receiving yards and led the league in that category twice (2002 and 2003). Injuries did catch up to him in later years though, limiting him to just nine games in 2014 and seven games in 2015 due to multiple leg surgeries.
Despite those struggles, it was clear that Gonzalez still had something left in the tank when he caught 10 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns against the Houston Texans last season – his final game ever. It will be interesting to see what Gonzalez does next – whether he retires again or decides to
