Overview of the Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals are a professional ice hockey team based in Washington, D.C. They are members of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Capitals play their home games at Capital One Arena. The franchise began play in 1974 as an expansion team, and won their first division title in 1988–89. They have won nine division titles since then, most recently in 2015–16. In 2018, they won their first Stanley Cup championship.
The Capitals were founded on June 11, 1974, when Abe Pollin was awarded an NHL expansion franchise for Washington, D.C., becoming the first owner of an NHL team since 1941 with a group that included his wife Irene and acquired majority control three years later. Pollin had built the Capital Centre arena to house both the Bullets and the Capitals; however, by 1977 it became apparent that he would only be able to keep one tenant due to mounting financial losses for both teams. The Bullets moved to Landover as the Maryland Bullets beginning with the 1974–75 season while Pollin retained ownership of the Capitals but transferred majority control over to Gilbert Hahn Jr..
In 1982, Dick Patrick purchased controlling interest in Landover-based Capital Centre Company (which owned the arena) from Pollin and became chairman of its board of directors; he would go on to become majority owner in 1984 and buy out Hahn’s minority share two years later. The following year he hired David Poile as
The History of the Washington Capitals
The Washington Capitals are a professional ice hockey team based in Washington, D.C. They are members of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Capitals are owned by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, headed by Ted Leonsis. The franchise began play in 1974 as an expansion team, and their first season was highlighted by the debut of future Hall of Fame head coach Bryan Murray and star forward Alex Ovechkin. The team struggled mightily during their first decade in existence, but reached the playoffs for the first time in 1983.
In 1988, the Caps made a blockbuster trade for defenseman Kevin Hatcher, who would become a key part of their blueline for years to come. The following year, they drafted another future star in center Nicklas Backstrom. The early 1990s saw the Caps reaching the playoffs on a regular basis, but they were unable to get past the second round until 1998, when they finally advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.
The 2000s were a highly successful decade for the Capitals, as they won seven Southeast Division titles and qualified for the playoffs in every season except 2002-03. They made it back to the Conference Finals in 2001 and again in 2003, but were unable to get over the hump and advance to the Stanley Cup Final. In 2008-09, however, everything came together for Washington as they captured their first Presidents’ Trophy
