Jets on Verge of Historic Feat: One Game from Jennings Trophy
The Winnipeg Jets are on the cusp of achieving something they’ve never done before: winning the William M. Jennings Trophy, awarded to the NHL team with the fewest goals allowed during the regular season.
With just one game remaining against the Vancouver Canucks, the Jets have conceded only 197 goals, two fewer than the Florida Panthers who have already played all their games.

This accomplishment would be a major turnaround for the Jets, whose previous best ranking in this category was fifth place back in 2018. Coach Rick Bowness acknowledges the significant shift in defensive philosophy and credits the players for buying into the new system.
“It’s a big transition,” says defenseman Dylan DeMelo. “We used to be more offensive-minded, but you realize you can’t win that way.”

Historically, the Jets have struggled defensively, never allowing fewer than 200 goals in a full season (excluding shortened seasons). While the Jennings Trophy would be a significant achievement, it’s not the ultimate goal.
“It’s a nice thing to have, but what really matters is the playoffs,” DeMelo says.
The award technically goes to the goaltender(s) who played at least 25 games. In this case, Connor Hellebuyck would be the recipient as he’s played the majority of games, shutting out backup Laurent Brossoit who has played in 22 games. Coach Bowness expresses his disagreement with this rule, praising Brossoit’s contribution nonetheless.

Looking ahead to the final game, Brossoit will get the start, while most players who sat out the previous game are expected to return. DeMelo, aiming to play all 82 games for the first time in his career, will be one of them.
Another aspect on the line for the Jets’ final game is securing second place in the Western Conference, potentially granting them home-ice advantage if they meet the Canucks again in the playoffs. However, Coach Bowness downplays this advantage, emphasizing the importance of focusing on good habits and preparing for the upcoming series against the Colorado Avalanche.
The exact date for the Jets-Avalanche series is yet to be determined.
