Mazda specifies medium-term targets and roadmap towards achieving carbon neutrality
Mazda Motor Corporation (“Mazda”) has outlined its medium-term targets and roadmap for achieving carbon neutrality at its plants and operational sites in Japan. These locations contribute to approximately 75% of the company’s global total CO2 emissions. This initiative is part of Mazda’s broader commitment to attain carbon neutrality at all its global plants by 2035 and across the entire supply chain by 2050. The immediate goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 69% by fiscal year 2030 compared to fiscal year 2013 levels.

Mazda identifies carbon neutrality as a key management policy initiative up to 2030. The company will focus on three main pillars to achieve carbon neutrality globally: energy conservation, transitioning to renewable energy, and adopting carbon-neutral fuels. Mazda has provided details of its roadmap for domestic plants and operational sites, emphasizing their critical role in achieving carbon neutrality.
Energy conservation efforts include the introduction of Internal Carbon Pricing as a capital investment criterion, ensuring that future carbon trading prices are considered in investment decisions. Mazda aims to prioritize investments contributing significantly to CO2 emissions reduction across all areas, including production and infrastructure.
In terms of renewable energy, Mazda plans to switch the fuel for power generation facilities at its Hiroshima plant Ujina District from fossil fuels to liquid ammonia. The company also intends to increase the use of non-fossil fuel-derived sustainable energy, aiming for a usage ratio of 75% by fiscal year 2030.

For the introduction of carbon-neutral fuels, Mazda will shift the fuel used for company transport from diesel to a next-generation biofuel. In areas where alternative fuel power generation is challenging, the company will leverage J-credits to support forestry preservation and reforestry efforts, absorbing CO2 in regions like Chugoku.
Takeshi Mukai, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer, expressed Mazda’s commitment to carbon-neutral initiatives, emphasizing the responsibility of automotive manufacturers in reducing CO2 emissions. The company aims to achieve carbon neutrality at all global plants by 2035 and extend efforts to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the entire supply chain by 2050.

For Mazda’s factories outside Japan, the company will explore region-specific approaches using the carbon-neutral initiatives in Japan as a reference. Collaborating with local organizations, Mazda will work towards achieving carbon neutrality at all its factories globally by 2035. The company’s commitment to human-centric values and the joy of driving aligns with its broader goal of delivering emotional mobility experiences to customers, enhancing the joy of living.
