Uneven Three-Point Arcs Disrupt NCAA Women’s Tournament Game
An irregularity on the court caused a stir during the NCAA women’s basketball tournament’s Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight games held at Moda Center in Portland. The three-point lines on either side of the court were discovered to be different lengths, raising concerns about fairness in the competition.
Both coaches, Wes Moore of North Carolina State and Vic Schaefer of Texas, were informed of the discrepancy shortly before tip-off for their Elite Eight matchup. Faced with the choice to delay the game for repairs or play on the uneven court, they opted for the latter. Reportedly, fixing the court could have taken up to an hour.

The NCAA, however, offered little explanation for the mishap. Their initial statement acknowledged the issue and confirmed the coaches’ decision to proceed with the game. A later statement placed blame on Connor Sports, the vendor responsible for the court’s installation. The NCAA also declined to allow independent measurement of the court after the game.

While the exact impact on the outcome remains unclear, some coaches observed a possible influence on shooting. North Carolina State, whose bench faced the shorter three-point line, made a higher percentage of three-pointers on the opposite side. However, both coaches ultimately downplayed the significance of the uneven court.

Interestingly, a fan named Michael McGrath is credited with first noticing the discrepancy during Sunday’s game. McGrath, attending the game by chance, spotted the uneven lines from his seat and alerted nearby officials through a chain reaction involving another spectator. This resulted in a delay before the game commenced.
The incident highlights the importance of proper court setup in high-stakes games. The NCAA has vowed to investigate the cause of the error and ensure accurate court markings in future tournaments.
