Peugeot Reveals Updated 9X8 2024 Car
Peugeot Unveils Upgraded Le Mans Hypercar with Rear Wing
French automaker Peugeot has revealed their revamped Le Mans Hypercar, the 9X8 2024. This new version features a significant aerodynamic change: a rear wing.
This shift away from their original “wingless” design comes as a response to rule changes regarding tire dimensions. The original 9X8 was designed for tires with the same width front and rear (31cm). However, current regulations allow for wider rear tires (29cm front, 34cm rear) – a setup already adopted by competitors like Toyota.

Adapting to the New Rules
Peugeot’s technical boss, Olivier Jansonnie, explained that while the original design focused on underfloor downforce, the new tire configuration necessitated a change. Since the decision came too late for a complete redesign in 2022, they opted to wait until now to implement the wider tires and adjust the car accordingly.
These adjustments include:
- A rear wing to create a more rearward aerodynamic balance.
- Weight distribution shifted towards the rear axle.
- Modifications to underbody downforce to stay within performance limits.

Focus on Reliability
While the core structure and hybrid system remain unchanged, the gearbox and engine have received reliability upgrades. The shift in design concept allows for more weight to be positioned over the rear axle, addressing previous limitations.

Preserving the Design Identity
Jansonnie emphasized that despite the extensive aerodynamic overhaul (with 90-95% of surfaces modified), they aimed to retain the original car’s distinctive look.
“It was a challenge,” he said, “but we successfully kept the car’s overall DNA while revising the aero completely.”
Testing and Development
The exact number of development allowances (“EVO jokers”) used for the 9X8 2024 remains undisclosed. However, Jansonnie estimates the car has completed a significant testing distance of 7,000 to 8,000 kilometers.
This revamped 9X8 is set to make its debut at the upcoming Imola round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.
