Over the past few decades, politicians have sought to leverage the military’s popularity for political gain, using soldiers as backdrops for foreign policy speeches and exploiting statements by military leaders to advance their agendas. However, recent years have seen this politicization take a darker turn. Tuberville’s unprecedented move to hold military promotions as a political bargaining chip underscores this shift, signaling a worrying trend toward overt politicization within the military ranks.
The next phase of politicization may entail even more egregious actions, with politicians manipulating appointments and promotions to install military leaders sympathetic to the right wing of the Republican Party. This would upend current conventions, where military leaders strive for nonpartisanship in their interactions with political figures and the public. Norms and regulations that restrict service members’ partisan activity could be disregarded, paving the way for officers to align themselves with specific political ideologies openly.

To prevent such a scenario, concerted efforts are needed to safeguard the military’s nonpartisan ethos and shield it from undue political influence.
