Ukraine celebrates first Christmas on 25 December
This year marks a significant change for many Ukrainian Orthodox Christians as they prepare to celebrate Christmas on 25 December, departing from the traditional Julian calendar, which aligns with Russia’s celebration on 7 January.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initiated this shift in July, emphasizing a departure from Russian heritage. In his Christmas message, Zelensky highlighted the unity of all Ukrainians in celebrating Christmas on the same date, fostering a sense of togetherness as one nation.

In Kyiv, a married couple, Lesia Shestakova (Catholic) and Oleksandr Shestakov (Orthodox), expressed joy in celebrating Christmas together after previously observing the holiday twice with their respective parents. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), established in 2019, also moved its Christmas date to 25 December, breaking ties with the Russian Orthodox Church over geopolitical issues.

While some Ukrainians continue to follow the historically Russia-linked Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and celebrate on 7 January, the OCU’s influence has been growing. The diversity in Christmas celebration dates reflects the evolving religious landscape in Ukraine.
