Ducati Scrambles as Pramac Considers Yamaha Switch

Rumors are swirling in the MotoGP paddock that Ducati could lose two spots on the 2025 grid. Pramac, Ducati’s long-time partner and 2023 champion team, is reportedly considering a shocking switch to Yamaha.

This move would have major ramifications. Pramac currently receives top-of-the-line Ducati bikes and riders directly contracted to the factory. Losing Pramac would force Ducati to streamline its rider placement for the remaining two satellite teams.

While streamlining could be beneficial, it creates a headache for Ducati manager Gigi Dall’Igna. He must now find new homes for contracted riders and those they’re targeting, with two fewer spots available.

The situation is further complicated by Yamaha’s interest in Pramac. With VR46, Yamaha’s other target, likely renewing with their current supplier, Pramac becomes an attractive option after two decades with Ducati.

A Pramac-Yamaha switch would be welcomed by Dorna, the series promoter, who encourages balanced manufacturer representation. However, it would force Dall’Igna to juggle factory bikes and rider placement for 2025.

Factory Bike Frenzy

Pramac’s current deal grants them two latest-generation bikes and factory-contracted riders. One of these riders, Jorge Martin (current championship leader), proved his title-contending ability in 2023.

VR46 and Gresini Racing, further down the pecking order, use year-old machinery with their own contracted riders. This includes big names like Marco Bezzecchi (2023 title contender) and Marc Marquez (six-time champion).

VR46 previously pushed for a factory-spec bike for Bezzecchi, but Ducati is wary of repeating a 2022 scenario with five factory entries. Additionally, Pramac’s right to factory bikes means VR46 and Gresini’s upgrade hopes hinge on Pramac’s decision: stay and get factory bikes, or leave.

One thing’s certain: Pramac’s star rider, Martin, won’t be back next year. He desires a factory Ducati seat and likely has offers from Aprilia and potentially others. It’s hard to imagine him staying at Pramac, even if they remain a Ducati partner.
